THINGS TO DO NEAR CHARLOTTE
Charlotte is located in the heart of the Hunter Valley in Pokolbin. The area is absolutely bursting with some of Australia’s best wine, food and beautiful scenery. Here are a few of our favourite spots:
The Hunter Valley was the first winemaking region in Australia with winemaking in the area dating back to 1826. It’s no surprise that some of the country’s best winemakers have settled here and are pumping out some of the best vino this country has to offer. While there are a lot of large producers here, nothing beats the boutique cellar door experience.
Angus Vinden of Vinden Estate is a second generation wine-maker who is making waves in the industry right now. His 2018 Shiraz was awarded the honour of the Hunter’s best Shiraz by Gourmet Traveller Wine and in the same year the Halliday Wine Guide named him the Dark Horse winemaker of the year. The cellar is a unique and personal experience.
Another absolute gun of Hunter winemaking, Matt Burton, is located just up the road at his winery, Gundog Estate. Matt stays true to the mainstays of the Hunter, being Semillon and Shiraz, and produces various excellent examples of both by experimenting with fruit parcels from different regions and different winemaking techniques. Matt is also a decorated winemaker, having drawn with Vinden Estate for the Hunter’s best Shiraz in 2018!
The Peterson family are of the most well-known wine families in the Hunter. The Peterson’s cellar door on Mt View is a quaint spot to enjoy a very unique wine-tasting experience. While they are well-known for big, in-your-face red varietals, they also produce excellent Chardonnay and Semillon.
One of the best food experiences in the Hunter Valley has to be the relatively new Yellow Billy Restaurant. This one is for the carnivores, as Yellow Billy specialises in the art of cooking over fire. They source the best proteins that the region has to offer, cook it over flames and serve with your choice of delightful side dishes. If that’s not enough, Yellow Billy shares a building with one of our favourite wineries, Pigg’s Peake so make sure you allow enough time to have a wine-tasting before lunch!
